Faux Feminism

I am not a fan of Donald Trump. But on Sunday on CNN, one of Trump's aides brought up the subject of female genital mutilation. Stephen Miller quoted statistics that half a million girls in the US are now at risk of FGM because of the immigration policies of the current government. He was scoffed by the other members of the panel, in particular the two women present. They should know better, they should check the facts before they scoff at what he said.

In fact, Newsweek covered the issue earlier this month, reporting, “The number of women and girls at risk for female genital mutilation (FGM) in the United States has more than doubled in the past 10 years, according to new figures released on Friday.”
More than half a million women and girls in the U.S. are at risk of undergoing FGM in the U.S. or abroad, or have already undergone the procedure, including 166,173 under the age of 18, according to the Population Reference Bureau(PRB).  http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/03/29/womens-rights-activists-female-genital-mutilation-is-taking-place-on-u-s-soil/

It is true that new immigrants will bring with them their beliefs and one of those is that young girls should be circumcised in order to maintain their purity until marriage. It is a barbaric practise but some medical facilities are caving in and performing these so-called "nicks" to young girls.

One person who has worked hard to expose this practise is Ayaan Hirsi Ali, herself a victim of FGM by her grandmother at the young age of 4 or 5.

Stephen Miller, Trump's aide, is absolutely correct. This is an issue that we should be talking about, rather than discussing ad nauseum the silly tweets about candidates' wives and who said what about how some woman looked. Endless discussion of these topics keeps people from hearing about the things that really matter, such as the murder of Kate Steinle in California last summer by an illegal immigrant. If that immigrant had not been allowed to reside in a sanctuary city and live unrestrained by the law, Kate Steinle would still be alive.

It is particularly frustrating when women harp on about women's issues and feminism but they refuse to talk about issues such as FGM and illegal immigrants killing innocent women. They reserve their outrage for superficial things like someone's comments or tweets or re-tweets. If they were real feminists, they would talk about the things that really hurt women, actual things instead of words flipped out thoughtlessly in stupid conversations.

The Liberal World View

In the wake of the latest terror attacks in Brussels, all sorts of pundits are making statements on the news. I was appalled by the naivete of certain liberal commentators in their assessments of the situation and in their defense of President Obama's strategy for dealing with ISIS.

I take Juan Williams for example. Juan is a veteran political commentator, employed by Fox News, as one of their token Democrats. They have a few of those, to provide some balance in their presentation of issues and also to provide debate which can become quite raucous. Today was a case in point.

The Five is a show where five pundits talk about the issues of the day. The tone is generally quite light and the panel is able to agree and disagree with one another without getting aggressive. They show good will towards one another; I think this is the key reason for the popularity of this show.

Today, the question was asked whether President Obama should have cut his South American trip short and return to Washington and whether or not he was showing seriousness in his remarks about the terror attack in Brussels. Most of the panel stated that Obama was displaying his usual attitude when talking about terrorists; he lacks a seriousness, in fact he lacks a comprehension, of what is going on and what is at stake. However Juan defended Obama, as I knew he would. But he went even further: he claimed that Obama's strategy is winning over ISIS and that ISIS is actually losing this battle.

This brought guffaws from some of the panel. Jesse Waters, in particular, derided Juan for his remarks and sarcastically turned them back upon Juan to show just how ridiculous his statements had been. Juan said something to the effect (the show isn't online yet, otherwise I would link to it) that ISIS could no longer make the big attacks that they wanted and were stuck doing these little attacks with single bombs here and there. Kimberley Guilfoyle erupted at Juan, asking him where he had been for the last six months, had he been asleep, didn't he know about San Bernadino, about France, she listed about six attacks that had happened fairly recently. Juan replied that they were not related. In fact, he stated the San Bernadino attackers were "lone wolves" and not connected with the attack in Brussels. Jesse promptly interrupted "they are all lone wolves Juan".

How naive!  Unbelievably naive!  I thought about this and it occurred to me that the liberal left cannot admit of a world in which people do bad things because they are bad. Their entire world view is built upon a utopian ideology that is based upon the innate goodness of mankind.

Therefore they cannot admit of people "going rogue" and killing others because of any evil intent. There must be ways to handle this. More education, more instilling of good values, more respect, more tolerance will bring out the best in people. They will not acknowledge that there is evil in the world and sometimes people commit evil deeds because they have decided to be evil. There is just no room in their worldview to admit of the presence of evil. All people can and will be good; they just need the right circumstances and the understanding of people to bring this about.

How do you come against such an ideology and show it to be wrong?

This Friday is the explanation. Jesus Christ's coming to earth would mean nothing if he hadn't died on the cross. He would be just another good man who was mistreated and not understood. But he came to crush the head of the evil one; yes, there is evil and there is a force behind the presence of evil. Unless you understand that man needs to be saved, you can never really come to grips with much that happens in this world.

Many people will lead good lives and do good things. But there will always be the fact of death, the fact of suffering, and how are you going to explain that without the concept of the Christian God who makes sense of the suffering.

Many non-believers say that they cannot believe in God because of the presence of evil. But I think how can you not believe in God, when you see evil? God is the only explanation for what is wrong with the world. The cross on Good Friday is the place where God came right into the midst of all this evil and suffering and his death there is what makes sense of that suffering and evil. Nothing else can even come close.

Pro-Information

A new documentary exploring the consequences of abortion.

https://vimeo.com/113116694

As journalist Barbara Kay says, "this is not about being pro-life or pro-choice, it's about being pro-information."

If you are a student or a person with an organization that has the ability to get this documentary, try to do so. Women deserve to know the truth about abortion.

Signs for Life Halifax

New sign going up in Halifax NS in a week or so. Baby Luc, about a minute after birth, taking his very first breath this side of the uterine world.

Just because a baby doesn't breathe in utero as we do after birth, they still breathe or respire by getting oxygen through the blood from mom's placenta. If people only had some inkling of the development of human beings in the womb, they would really hesitate to endorse abortion.

But as the reaction to the recent pro-life signs in Ottawa shows, people are in complete denial of the science. While they will talk about viruses and bacteria with great seriousness, they refuse to talk about the growing fetus/baby in a mother's womb.

This sign on the back of OC Transpo buses says Abortion Stops a Beating Heart. There are no graphic images or disturbing photos of aborted babies, just a simple statement. But aggressive pro-choicers have been demanding that the transit adminstration remove these signs because they are hurtful to women who have had abortions.

Grow up. If you feel mature enough to have an abortion, then you should be mature enough to let a statement like this stand. After all, it is just a simple fact - abortion does stop a beating heart. But admitting that would mean admitting to killing and that is a place that people haven't got the guts to go.

When we ran our first sign which stated Luc was born today, but his life began nine months ago, we got a volume of publicity about it, most of it very negative. Even a pediatrician at the children's hospital thought the sign was insensitive and shouldn't be anywhere near the hospital where women go to have an abortion in Halifax.

I wonder what reaction this latest sign will get. It is the same baby Luc, as he draws his first breath. There seems to be an instinctive reaction to this photo of a newborn that stirs up incredible anguish in some women.  It is our hope that that anguish leads to their choosing some place to find healing for what they suffer, which is either grief and guilt over their own abortion, or anger that sexual activity comes with consequences.

Are people free to be pro-choice?

We do not buy into the lie that we are somehow against women’s rights, or against freedom: we believe very strongly in free will, because we know that we were created free by God.

However, we also know that there is a difference between freedom and licence.

Freedom, we know, is always ordered to the good, and one can never use the argument of freedom to do something that is intrinsically evil or contrary to the good. No one would stand up and defend a rapist’s “freedom to rape” or a thief’s “freedom to steal.” No one would say that we should be “free to hate” or “free to lie” or “free to hurt” another human being intentionally.

Then why is it that so many in today’s society can’t understand the fact there there is no such thing as the “freedom to kill”? When a person takes an innocent human life at will, he is implying that his so-called “freedom to kill” trumps the other person’s freedom to live.

But there is no such thing as the freedom to kill, since freedom can never be used to justify doing evil. Freedom is ordered to truth, to charity, and therefore also to the good.

Freedom can never be used to justify doing evil.  Wow!

Euthanasia - a worldwide issue

In Canada, the situation is that the Supreme Court passed legislation a year ago allowing assisted suicide. They gave the members of Parliament one year to consult and come up with recommendations for the parameters of this law. That time is coming to a close in June.

Very few Canadians are even aware of this issue. And so very few even care.

First abortion, now euthanasia and assisted suicide. What will it take to make Canadians care about anything?

If there is an effort in your parish or community to challenge this coming legislation, get involved. Start a petition, do something, don't just sit there and take this onslaught as we have taken everything else. It is time that we got some backbone and stood up for something right in this country.
