Matercare is a non-profit charitable organization that seeks to help women in the third world to have their babies. Because Matercare has a pro-life ideology, it will not promote contraception or abortion; for that reason, it has been denied government funding from CIDA eleven times. Yet the organization has a wonderful track record of actually helping women, especially in Africa.
So there is a petition to be sent to Prime Minister Harper, asking him to consider allowing federal funds to go to Matercare, to help with their work.
You can sign the petition here.

Since I spent my first year of married life in Malawi, Africa and our first child was born there, this is especially important to me. When I gave birth, there were seven other women in the hospital also giving birth. I was the only white woman there. Given the statistics for that country in 1974, our daughter would be only one of two of those babies who would reach the age of five.
The greatest problems in Africa are access to clean water and exposure to diseases such as cholera, malaria, AIDS, and tuberculosis. Abortion does not solve any of those problems. Good maternal care and especially birthing in hygienic conditions are key to saving lives in that continent. Matercare is one organization that really understands that. Please sign the petition. It is the least we can do.
